Maple
Maple
Maple trees produce "helicopter seeds" called "samara." The winged shape of these seeds allows the wind to carry them away from the shade of their parent tree, so they can grow up somewhere sunny.
One way to tell the difference between a Norway maple and a sugar maple is to pinch the seed of their samara. If the seed feels flat, it's a Norway maple, and if it's round and solid, it's a sugar maple.Â
Didn't get this one right? Don't worry! Just like other living things, there's a lot of diversity in the plant kingdom, and even two trees of the same species can look very different from each other. Identification takes practice!
